Sci-fi field guide- visual development

 Visual development

Initially I am going to try a few drawings in different styles and mediums to see what works best. I want to avoid digital work, I usually work digitally but the quality of traditional drawing suits this project far more. Many of the drawings in this blog won't make it into the final version, but all of it is valuable research and practice for me.

Really light sketchy style, doesn't scan very well.

Digitally increased contrast. Got quite a nice quality to it when the contrast is increased, could consider this for elements of the 'journal'.

Sections will be accompanied by some skulls of some of the animals to follow, will be collected on one page in a surface pattern style.

I'm not sure about this, its not the style I will be going for- it's not scientific enough. It isn't clear enough or particularly visually appealing.

Loving this style, I have used an old paper texture multiply. I am going to try creating my own textures on paper for multiply overlays, so that's its my own and also so I've got consistent but different versions so the texture isn't always the same. I will do this by trying to stain paper with tea or coffee and see how that looks.

Rough page plans:
I am initially focussing on the cat family section of the book. the following are some very rough concept pages. text will be handwritten to give the illusion of a field guide but I will play around with placement and style. some images will end up as more refined sketches whilst others will have colour and a more polished finish.

I will be creating my own font later to give the illusion of handwriting whilst making it legible and consistent.
Refining :

The text is placeholder and the texture is still a stock image, I am still planning to create my own.

Some image will be more refined close ups.

I'm terrible at drawing human faces, so I'm using style to my advantage ;)
Multiple similar but distinct styles keep the book interesting as well as make for a more realistic field guide experience.

Making my own font:

Creating my own textured paper:

Using coffee and tea and a tan paper, I will let these dry and scan them in and see if it works!
(still using stock texture) Here I am beginning to format my pages. The font looks great but for some reason my computer is really struggling to use the font and is buffering constantly when I try to add and edit the text. I need to keep in mind a bleed around the outside to prevent losing work when printing.

Textures:

My texture! The process was successful, it looks good.
